Dr. Cherry Leung is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Community Health Systems. She received her M.S. and preparation as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology at the School of Public Health at the University of Hong Kong. Her research interest is disease prevention and mental health promotion of children and adolescents, with a primary focus on depression.

Tony Yang, MD, PhD

Dr. Tony T. Yang is a psychiatrist who specializes in diagnosing and treating depression in adolescents. Yang earned a doctorate in molecular pathology at the University of California, San Diego, before earning his medical degree from the UC San Diego School of Medicine. He completed a residency in general psychiatry and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Stanford University School of Medicine. In his research, Yang studies depression in adolescents using functional MRI, which measures brain activity by detecting changes associated with blood flow.

Nicole Padilla, MD

Nicole Padilla is a Clinical Research Coordinator with a medical degree from Mexico City and experience in both clinical and basic science research. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Clinical Research, building on her work in NIH-funded and community-based studies focused on adolescent mental health, substance use, and health disparities in underserved populations. Her early research experience includes basic science work on HIV and HPV.

Junior Specialist

Jose Collado is a Junior Specialist for the Leung Lab. He earned his BSc in Nutritional Sciences from the University of California, Berkeley. His research interests lie in utilizing the human microbiome to better understand participant health and addressing health disparities in underserved populations. In the lab, Jose supports patient recruitment and retention, and he will be involved in microbial sample processing and data analysis once received.

Haruno Suzuki, MS, RN

Nursing PhD Student

Haruno Suzuki is a Graduate Student Researcher and second-year PhD student at the School of Nursing, University of California, San Francisco. She holds a Master of Health Science from the University of Tokyo and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Institute of Science, Tokyo. Haruno has clinical experience as a registered nurse in acute care settings in Japan. In her role, Haruno supports research and program implementation for the Probiotic Administration for Adolescent Depression Study.
